Uno Flip Rules

Uno Flip Rules

Uno Flip adds some new exciting adaptations to traditional Uno - This includes having both a light and dark version, alongside different action cards; making no game the same.

One of the main differences is that with Uno you can only play on one side, with the other side being just decorative art. In Uno Flip, there is twice the action, as you are required to use both sides of the cards.

In this simple guide we will explain everything you need to know to play this fun remake - allowing you to love it just as much as its original family favourite.

Goal

Just like Uno, the goal of Uno Flip is to be the first to play all the cards in your hand, scoring points for the cards held by other players as you go along - scoring 500+ points.

The ‘light and dark version’ mentioned above stands for both a ‘mild’ side with white fonts and borders. And a ‘wild’ side with black fonts and borders.

Contents of Each Deck

Included in Uno Flip are 112 deck cards, allowing for 2-10 players to take part in the game.

The light side will consist of blue, green, yellow and red cards alongside different action cards to the traditional Uno game.

In the case of drawing one card instead of two and a wild draw two cards instead of a wild draw four -  There are also Flip cards in each of the 4 colours to execute and trigger flipping over to the other side.  There are also Flip cards in each of the 4 colours to execute and trigger flipping over to the other side.

The dark side includes pink, teal, purple and orange cards, as well as wild draw colour cards, draw 5 cards (yes, you read that right) and flip cards to execute flipping.

Starting up

Ensuring all your cards are always facing one way is one of the main things to remember when starting the game. Whether it be the dark or light side, depending on what is in play, with gameplay always beginning on the light side.

The Dealer

A dealer is chosen by having everyone draw a card from the deck. Whoever has the highest number on the light side (action cards count as zero) becomes the dealer.

The dealer is the gameplayer who shuffles the deck and deals out 7 cards to each player. As mentioned previously, gameplay will begin on the light side so it’s crucial to have the light side facing you.

Once all cards have been drawn, the light side is placed facing down, these cards are now part of the draw pile with the top card of the draw pile being turned up (light side up) and placed down somewhere else to form a separate discard pile.

Playing the Game

The player to the left will begin, going in a clockwise direction until a reverse card is drawn.

You should begin by matching the topmost card on the discard pile with a number, colour or symbol (action cards) according to the side it is on (light or dark). For example, if the topmost card is a green 5 (light side), then you can continue to put down a green card, or a number 5 card of any colour (also light).

Action cards (explained below) can also be played on either the light or dark side, depending on the status of the discard pile.

If no suitable cards can be played then a card must be drawn from the draw pile. If this card can be played, you can play it - if not, then it is the next player's turn.

Top tip: If a card is playable and suitable, you may still choose NOT to play it, this is also okay.

Action Cards in Uno Flip

Uno Flip has traditional cards as well as new additions, these cards will be explained below, starting with the slight side.

Draw One

When played, the next player will need to draw one from the draw pile and skip their turn. You can only play this card if it's the same colour as the discard pile card, or on another draw one card of any colour on it.

Important note: Please bare in mind that this refers to another draw one card played by a player whose turn came before you, it does not imply stacking; stacking is not allowed.

If this card turns up as the first card when the game first begins, the first player (on the dealer's left) must draw a card and skip their turn.

Skip

When this card is played, the next player must skip their turn. Please be wary though as this card can only be played on top of a same-colour card or another skip card of any colour (put down earlier by a player). If it is the first card, the first player must skip their turn and the player to their left will go first instead.

Reverse

Once played, this card turns the direction of play to the opposite direction. Like the other action cards mentioned above, you can only play this card on a matching colour card or reverse card. If this happens on the first turn the dealer will go first instead, causing the game to go counter-clockwise (instead of the usual clockwise direction).

Wild Card

A wild card enables the player to choose what colour they want to continue to play. You can play this card even when you have other playable cards available (that match the card on top of the discard pile) because the wild card can represent ANY colour. If it turns up at the start, the first player will get to decide which colour to continue to play.

Wild Draw Two

Similar to a wild card, but will also require the next player to draw 2 cards from the draw pile and skip their turn. It also requires you to not have any suitable matching colour cards when playing it.

But here is where things can get tactical, if the next player suspects this card is played ‘illegally’, they are entitled to challenge you to show your hand to him/her. If it is proven that you are playing this card wrongly, you must draw two cards instead of the challenger. But if innocent, the challenger must now pick up 4 cards instead of two.

Flip Card

Only permitted to be played on top of a matching colour card or another flip card. When played, the game can change from light to dark, meaning all the cards will be flipped, including the discard pile (with the flip card being placed at the bottom), the draw pile, and the cards in people's hands.

Just like the Uno reverse card, this new side will remain until changed by a new flip card. This card can also be played if drawn right from the very start.

Dark Side

Remember that the dark side should never start a game, only the light side. Due to this, you should never worry about a dark side card opening up the game.

Draw Five

The next player will be required to draw 5 cards from the draw pile and skip their turn when this card is played (a lot of cards). You can only play this card when on a similarly coloured card or another draw five card lying on the discard pile.

Skip Everyone

Slightly different to the light skip card. When played, All other players are skipped and the person playing the card gets yet another go. You can only play this card on another card of the same colour or another skip everyone card of any colour.

Reverse

This card is the same in dark mode as it is in light mode, when played, the player turns will go from clockwise or anti-clockwise and vice-versa. It can also only be played on a card of the same colour, or another reverse card of any colour.

Wild card

Similar to the light card wild card. Playing this colour allows you to choose ANY colour you want to continue playing in, whether that be the colour you're currently playing or another one. You can also play this card even if you do not have suitable cards in hand.

Wild Draw Colour Card

Perhaps the most challenging of cards if played. With this card, you can specify the colour you want, and the next player will need to draw cards until they get a card with the colour you specified (and miss their turn). No matter how long it takes them, they can only continue when they get the chosen colour.

As well as challenging, this card is also tactical as it shares the same qualities as the wild draw card from the light side. You can only play this card if you don’t have any cards in your hand that match the colour of the topmost card on the discard pile.

Playing this card regardless can be risky as your opponent can challenge you to show your cards to ensure you’re innocent. If you are guilty, you have to draw cards until you get the chosen colour. If innocent, the challenger has to draw cards until they get the chosen colour PLUS 2 more cards.

Flip Card

The dark flip card works in the same way as the light side flip card. When played, all the cards should be flipped from the dark to the light side. Including the draw pile, discard pile and everyone's cards. It can only be played on a card of the same colour or another flip card and won’t change again until another flip card is played.

Going Out

Another main, well-known rule of Uno is to yell ‘Uno’ aloud when you are playing your second to last card. The purpose of this is to inform others that you’re going to win the round. If you forget this and the next person has already played their card, you will need to draw 2 cards from the draw pile (if someone catches you!)

Remember:  the objective is that the winner of the round is the first person to get rid of all their cards. Note that if your last card is a draw one, draw five, wild draw two or wild draw colour, the next player also needs to draw cards as instructed by those cards. These cards will continue to count towards the final score of the round winner.

If the draw pile depletes and no one has yet won the round, shuffle the discard pile and turn it into a new draw pile.

Scoring and Winning

The winner of the round gains points. The result is made by adding up all the points left in their opponent's hands, but it should only follow the side the game ended on. For example, draw ones should not be counted if the match ended on the dark side - as draw one cards are from the light side.

Card point scores are as follows:

  • Numbered cards (0-9) – Face value
  • Draw One – 10 points
  • Draw Five/Reverse/Skip/Flip – 20 points each
  • Skip Everyone – 30 points
  • Wild – 40 points
  • Wild Draw Two – 50 points
  • Wild Draw Colour – 60 points

The winner is the first player to achieve 500 or more points, although you can certainly set a more flexible point threshold depending on how many rounds you would like to play.

Alternative Gameplay

Another way to mix up the game is to keep a running tally of the points from each player at the end of each round. When someone reaches 500 points, the player with the lowest points is declared the winner instead.
